Gary Nattrass

MD, FRCSC, FRACS

Gary Nattrass is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interest in spinal deformity, hip problems, neuromuscular disorders (including cerebral palsy) and general paediatric orthopaedics. He cares for patients ranging in age from newborn to young adult.

Gary is originally from Canada where he received his M.D. from the University of Alberta and then after six years in family practice in California returned to undertake his orthopaedic surgery training (FRCSC) at the University of Calgary. He undertook Sub-Specialty Fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedics at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne and the UCLA affiliated Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Los Angeles before returning to Melbourne where he has been on the staff at Royal Children’s Hospital since 1995. He became an Australian citizen in 2002. Gary also operates privately at Cabrini Hospital (Malvern) and the Mercy Private Hospital (East Melbourne).

As one of Australia’s most experienced Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons Gary was elected by his peers to serve as President of the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (APOS) from 2009-2011. He has a keen interest in Orthopaedic education and is a past-Chairman of the Victorian&Tasmanian Regional Training Committee of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He has undertaken voluntary overseas work treating children in Papua New Guinea and China. Gary has undertaken numerous research projects at the RCH and has published extensively on subjects such as hip disorders and cerebral palsy. This has resulted in him being invited to speak internationally on these topics.

In addition to his formal qualifications, Gary has enjoyed a lifetime interest in sport. A former Canadian trapshooting champion and Olympic trapshooting coach as well as an intercollegiate ice hockey player in North America he continues to play ice hockey as well as golf and ski. In addition, as an enthusiastic supporter of his children’s activities, Gary has come to learn much about Aussie Rules, Cricket, Aerobics, Athletics, Long Distance Running, Netball and classical and jazz Ballet!
